Easypak's new Elevate Freshness product case study with Michigan State University's packaging case study.

Elevate Freshness™

When Easypak set out to create the next evolution in fresh-cut food packaging, they didn’t know they’d be able to give their customers two full days of revenue growth. However, independent product testing showed that not only could they, but that was just a tiny part of the value offered by their Elevate Freshness™ line of fruit packaging.

Easypak’s achievements in packaging engineering deliver significant ROI to major producers and packers, grab-and-go meal retailers, deli counters, and grocery chains.

But first, let’s examine the challenges they set out to overcome.

THE CHALLENGE

If you sell fresh-cut foods, you face some significant challenges. Starting with soaker pads that bloat the process and create consumer waste. Then, there are the ravages of purge, which eats up your profits, causes retail shrink, and forces discount prices or inventory loss. One thing is clear: protecting fruit from its own moisture can significantly extend its lifespan.

Fruit protected from liquid seepage doesn’t just last longer. It tastes better, has a better texture and color, and better maintains its nutritional value.

Easypak set out to transform their patented honeycomb-moisture trapping technology into the perfect fruit packaging. Their solution had to be tamper evident and run flawlessly at processor sites, including on automated equipment, and offer both hinged lid and film seal options.

They succeeded. But how could they prove the effectiveness of this groundbreaking solution? That’s where the School of Packaging at Michigan State University would come into the picture.

THE SOLUTION

Enter Elevate Freshness™. Easypak’s dedicated product engineers put their decades of experience into designing and perfecting packaging that would eliminate soaker pads and their extra waste, cut shrink, and end discount pricing for retailers by delivering and maintaining the longest-lasting product possible.

Easypak designed a full-system solution to manage moisture. Combining their honeycomb technology with innovative features called the Shore, the Islands, and the Ocean and micro-ventilation to allow optimal fruit respiration, they created an eloquent solution.

The Shore channels liquid that weeps from the product into the Ocean, while the fresh-cut fruit is held safely above the purge on the Islands.

The honeycomb feature then protects the product on the islands. This ingenious, purpose-engineered solution is ideal for increasing consumer satisfaction, longevity, and product quality for food retailers.

How perfect is it? Easypak sought independent testing from Michigan State University’s School of Packaging to answer that question.

THE RESULTS

The School of Packaging called their testing “EFFECTS OF PACKAGING DESIGN BASED ON HONEYCOMB TECH ON FOOD SHELF LIFE AND CONSUMER SATISFACTION.”

Their independent study determined that the Elevate Freshness™ packaging outperformed the control packaging in extending shelf life in terms of color, texture, total soluble solids, pH, and acidity. The fruit stored in this revolutionary packaging was also significantly preferred by the panel taste-testing both that and the control fruit.

Elevate Freshness™ packaging delivers better tasting, better looking, and longer-lasting fresh-cut fruit.
